Client: Edit Brand Studio | Paper Art: Helen Musslewhite
The Challenge
Digitally re-creating two of Helen Musselwhite’s hand-crafted paper sculptures, both of which were to be used for their own bespoke animations and TV campaigns. The aim was to maintain the visual aesthetic of the paper sculptures, whilst capturing the ‘heart and soul’ of the scenes through animation.
Chester Zoo’s Wild Worlds was a new summer festival for 2018 where the Zoo was transformed into unique worlds inspired by scientists, entertainers, landscape designers and artists. Brand consultancy and design studio Edit_developed the brand and the concept “let your imagination roam wild”, which then drove the creative for the entire campaign.

The Outcome
We delivered 2 x 30 second TV Ads, both with their own specific audience. The one you can see above was the main campaign, pitched at the younger family audience. Lower down the page you can see the more adult focussed version.

The Craft
Modelling in 3D from something as beautifully crafted as Helen Musslewhite's Art work was definitely a challenge. Thankfully it was also a true collaboration. We were able to visit Helen in her studio to see how it was being built, which was bonus information that really helped us with the modelling side.
The final artwork for the campaign was photographed by Jonathan Beer in a studio. This was used for billboards and web content. For the animation we worked from photographs and measurements to build a digital version as faithfully as we possibly could.
Going Digital
Once we started to get this into a wireframe format we realised that the digital side of it was ruining Helen's aesthetic. To counter this we needed to add more texture to the models, but also to reduce the slickness. We dialled back the frame rate, and used some clever lighting techniques to make it feel more homegrown.

And finally...
This has always been one of our favourite project, and something we don't mind talking about years later. A true creative collaboration between Agency, Artist and Animation Studio.
