Client: BGN

The Challenge

We were asked by BGN Agency to help them with their long standing client SkyTherm. Their product is a roof window, that can be added onto existing flat roof's. One way to do this would have been to film a conversion that had already been done, however there were a number of reasons that CGI was the preferred route.

The Outcome

The Outcome

A 30 second TV commercial, that combined original filmed and stock footage, with detailed and beautiful 3D CGI Interior shots. Using CGI allowed us to have complete control throughout the project, and also meant the set dressing and colour scheme could be changed in a click, and not require a re-paint.

The Craft

The 3D artist on this project began by creating mood boards that captured both the architectural style of the rooms and the furnishings that would bring them to life. Once approved, a wide selection of 3D furniture models from online libraries helped us to speed up production while keeping the design consistent with the chosen style.

From there a rough model of the room was built, blocking out the furniture layout. After feedback and approval, the space was refined by adding architectural detail, applying textures, and setting up lighting to achieve the right atmosphere.

Finally the garden environment, visible through the windows, was created. This was achieved by compositing a wide panoramic image in Photoshop from a collection of stock photos, which was then projected onto the perimeter of the 3D garden. The result was a convincing outdoor view that added depth and realism to the interiors without requiring heavy modeling. Working in this 3D world allows us complete flexibility in the process.

And finally...

Some film projects will always have their benefits. But there are also areas where this may not be the best solution. When we take on a 3D job, the design phase consists of one, or sometimes two, 3D artists sharing shots with the client. We can moodboard, get a feel of how they want it to look, and literally drop in pieces of furniture to different parts of the room. No need for the expense of physically building a set. And when it comes to lighting, we have full control. Something we did for BGN’s client Skytherm.

Also the repeatability. With this model now built, we can re use this, at minimal cost, for further commercials, social ads, print. This can be decided at a later date rather than having to plan out your entire campaign from the start. It allows the client to be reactive to how the original creative works. One to ponder if you’re pricing up a shoot?
